I have nailed my colours firmly to the mast with unequivocal support for Humza Yousaf in the SNP leadership election.

There is no doubt in my mind that Humza is the stand out candidate who will continue the Scottish Government’s relentless work to reduce child poverty. As an ex teacher, I know this ongoing work is so vital to help us end the poverty related attainment gap.

His commitment to accelerate the roll out of free nursery care for all 1 and 2 year olds is testament to this, as is his intention to increase the Scottish Child Payment – a benefit only provided in Scotland, and one that has been described as ‘game changing’ by the Child Poverty Action Group.

The Scottish Child Payment was introduced in 2021 at £10 per child per week under the age of 6. It now stands at £25 per child per week up to the age of 16 and is a lifeline for people on low incomes who are severely hit by the cost of living crisis, Tory austerity policies, Brexit, and rampant inflation courtesy of Liz Truss’s hugely damaging short-lived time as Prime Minister.

Scotland does not want trickledown economics. It has repeatedly voted for Nicola Sturgeon’s progressive tax policies and her serious pursuit of fair redistribution of income, coupled with universal benefits – free university tuition, no prescription charges, etc  – it’s a long list!

The only candidate I trust to continue that progressive, and highly successful approach is Humza. We need to keep building our infrastructure and our reputation in the eyes of the world, so we have a caring and compassionate country that is ready for independence.
