Kaukab Stewart MSP

On 8 May, at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, I was proud to be elected as the Member of the Scottish Parliament for Glasgow Kelvin and these were my remarks at the declaration:

“Firstly, I would like to thank the Returning Officer, and your staff, for ensuring this result has been conducted so efficiently in challenging circumstances. My thanks also go to the police and all the staff at polling stations and to my opposition candidates for a respectful contest.

“To the voters of Glasgow Kelvin, I cannot thank you enough for putting your trust in me. We are lucky to have one of the most diverse and vibrant communities in Kelvin and it is without doubt an honour to be elected as the first woman of colour to the Scottish Parliament. It has taken too long but to all the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic women and girls out there: you too belong in the Scottish Parliament. So, whilst I may be the first, I will not be the last!

“I intend to be a voice for every single person in Kelvin that I have been elected to represent. Whether you voted for me or not please know my door is always open.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank my husband and my children for their endless support and encouragement, I hope you know how much I love you – this would not have been possible without you.

“To Cllr Kenny McLean, my incredible Election Agent, to my campaign team and our unstoppable activists in Kelvin; your efforts have been superhuman and I am so humbled that due to your tireless hard work; I am able to represent our home in our Parliament. I promise to do my absolute best to make each one of you proud.

“I must also thank Sandra White for her decades of public service. I am privileged to call you a friend and I wish you the happiest of retirements.

“Record turnouts combined with the incredible results we have seen across the country over the past 48hrs clearly show that the people of Scotland reject the insular and isolationist policies of the Tory party and instead welcome a positive, open, and inclusive Scotland led by the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon.

“I cannot wait to get to work – helping all Kelvin communities recover from this pandemic and working to help Scotland achieve its independence!

“Thank you.”

About me

I’ve worked as a teacher in communities across Scotland for almost 30 years. I’m passionate about education and ensuring that every young person in Scotland is given an equal chance to succeed.

I stood as an SNP candidate in the first Scottish Parliament election in 1999 against the late Donald Dewar. Since then I’ve taken on other political heavyweights including former Chancellor Alistair Darling at the 2010 General Election.

On Saturday 08 May 2021 I was elected as the Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Glasgow Kelvin constituency, becoming the first ever woman of colour to hold a seat in the Scottish Parliament

“Kaukab has a wealth of experience but most importantly she has compassion and the interests of people at her heart. I could not ask for a better person to take my place in representing Glasgow Kelvin in the Scottish Parliament.”
