This afternoon I listened very carefully to the debate, with compelling and often emotional contributions from across the chamber, demonstrating the strength of feeling of MSPs both for and against the principal of Assisted Dying.

The opinions of my constituents have been extremely important to me, and I would like to thank all those that have taken time to share their own views on this very sensitive issue. I have also undertaken extensive research and asked many questions so that I would be better equipped to vote on this important issue.

As MSPs we were able to vote according to our own conscience, and I know that there will be constituents who will be disappointed with my vote for the bill at stage 1. This has been a difficult decision that I have taken very seriously.

I have consistently campaigned for people to have a good, dignified life, have choices, autonomy, access to support. I don’t have to agree with their choices, but I believe in their right to make those choices. The same principals can apply at the end of life.

The bill has passed today at stage 1 (general principals) now progressing to committee to consider amendments at Stage 2 to strengthen safeguards and address concerns. The bill will then return to the Parliament where MSPs will have the opportunity at Stage 3 to vote for or against the amended bill. I will continue to follow this bill as it progresses and follow the debate as it develops.
