As the MSP for Glasgow Kelvin, where the Sandyford NHS Clinic is located, I am very concerned by the protests outside healthcare facilities and the events in the USA, especially the appalling decision taken the US Supreme Court to overturn the finding in the Roe v Wade case.
I attended the Abortion Care Summit convened and chaired by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on 27 June. The Scottish Government is fully committed to finding a way forward to protect women and girls’ access to healthcare free from fear and intimidation. The summit brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from Ireland and England.
We learned that it is a complex issue and it is incumbent upon us to explore all options that enable safe zones which are consistent with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
I have come away from the summit with the firm belief that there is the strong will to move forward to deliver safe zones for women and girls to access healthcare. It was agreed that there should be another summit in 6 months.
Please get in touch with me if I can be of assistance with issues relating to this disturbing situation.
