Vote Kaukab Stewart #1 for Glasgow Southside

I want Scotland to be an independent country quite simply because I want us to build a better, fairer, more equal and prosperous nation for ourselves. I want our country to be the best possible place to live, work and grow up in. The SNP in Government has made huge progress in tackling some of the fundamental issues that stand in the way of achieving these goals, but it’s clear that we need the full powers of independence otherwise we rely on a backwards Westminster system, which punishes the most vulnerable in our communities, no matter who’s in charge.

I am the Minister for Equalities in the SNP Government, led by John Swinney. I was proudly elected as the first ever woman of colour to the Scottish Parliament in 2021. After three decades working as a teacher, becoming an MSP for the Glasgow Kelvin constituency has been an honour. At next years election, Glasgow’s boundaries will be changed significantly – so I am asking for your vote to be the next MSP candidate for the new Glasgow Southside constituency – my home constituency.

Being an MSP is a tough job, but one I love. I work tirelessly for my constituents and ensure I am visible and reachable. I’m proud that my work since 2021 has seen some significant progress:

  • I campaigned on behalf of residents who have flammable cladding on their homes for a change in the law which would compel developers to carry out necessary remedial works. That law passed in 2024.
  • I led a Committee Inquiry into the lived experience of asylum seekers in Scotland, which recommended the Scottish Government provided free bus travel to those seeking asylum here. The Scottish Government has committed to this on a permanent basis by 2026.
  • And recently, I launched the Blind Companion Pilot Scheme, which gives companions of blind people travelling by train free rail travel – easing just one of the many challenges faced by disabled people.

I know how fortunate I am, having moved here with my family from Pakistan as a wee girl, growing up in Glasgow’s Southside, being elected to Holyrood and serving as the first ever female ethnic minority minister in Scotland. Equality is fragile; it’s not a moment to achieves, but a standard we need to consistently strive for. Scotland is a beautiful, diverse, and loving nation – and our nation’s parliament should reflect that diversity.

If the SNP is fortunate enough to be elected as Scotland’s next Government, it will be a tough job, there’s no doubt about it. We need experienced energy representing our communities and our party’s movement to take us on our next chapter towards independence. With me, you will have a candidate who knows what it takes to win an election and, if elected, an MSP who gets things done.

I’m more than happy to have a blether and answer any questions you may have. Please get in touch on the email below.

As an SNP councillor for the Langside ward in the new Southside constituency, I can’t think of anyone better than Kaukab to fight and win this seat for the SNP. As a Scottish Government Minister, she has the profile, experience and authority to take on our political opponents, to effectively communicate the achievements of the SNP in Government, and to reach out and connect with every single community in this diverse constituency.

I’ve seen how Kaukab has worked closely with local SNP members in her time as an MSP and the effort she puts in to campaign alongside them. Now her existing constituency has been dissolved, she’s a natural fit for this new constituency where she went to school and where she lives today.

And as someone who has fought the good fight for the Independence cause for 30 years, in bad times as well as good, I know Kaukab will never hold back in putting the fight for Scotland’s independence front and centre.

Cllr Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council SNP group

I was absolutely thrilled to hear that Kaukab was putting herself forward for Glasgow Southside. When I stood in the council elections in 2022, she was a fantastic mentor – supportive at every stage, always up for a chat, and constantly out on the campaign trail.

I’ve followed her work in the Scottish Parliament, where she’s a powerful voice for her current constituency and an excellent Scottish Government Minister. She’ll be a perfect fit for the Glasgow Southside – she went to school here, later taught in a local school, and now calls the area home again.

Kaukab is also a tireless campaigner for Scottish independence – it’s at the heart of everything she does. She’s a real asset to the SNP.

Linsey Wilson, Glasgow Southside campaigner

In politics, character counts. Integrity counts. And above all, the courage to stand up for your values. That’s why I’m proud to offer my support for Kaukab Stewart to become the SNP candidate for Glasgow Southside.

Kaukab has never been one to chase headlines or pander to fleeting political trends. Instead, she has quietly and consistently lived the values that our party was built on — fairness, equality, and the belief that Scotland should be a confident and independent country. As a teacher, a trade union campaigner, and the first woman of colour elected to the Scottish Parliament, Kaukab has lived the values of this constituency – a huge chunk of which I had the privilege of representing as an MP for over 9 years.

Southsiders need a representative who listens, leads with principle, and will commit to the hard, unglamorous work of public service – all critical to building confidence in the independence cause. That’s the kind of politician Kaukab is.

At a time when our politics can feel polarised and performative, Kaukab brings a quiet strength and that is what we need more of. Her life and work are rooted in the communities she seeks to represent. She understands that political office is about public service and taking forward Scotland’s national cause.

I can think of no one better to carry forward the torch in Glasgow Southside. Kaukab Stewart has my full support, and I hope she’ll have yours too.
