Glasgow Kelvin SNP MSP Kaukab Stewart has welcomed the confirmation of a new law that will enable the Scottish Government to take urgent action on properties with flammable or unsafe cladding.

The First Minister outlined the commitment in the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government, announced today.  Kaukab Stewart MSP had previously received commitment from the First Minister that all options for tackling dangerous cladding remained on the table, including legislation to compel developers to do the right thing if needed.

Commenting, Kaukab Stewart MSP said:

“I welcome this commitment from the First Minister, who indicated to me just a few days after he came into office that legislating to get things moving on dangerous cladding remained on the table.

“I have had numerous meetings with the Housing Minster on this issues, and I know he fully understands the situation and the impact it is having on many of my constituents, across a number of properties in the Glasgow area.

“I’ve spoken extensively with people in this situation, and their message is loud and clear: they just wanted their lives back.  Many are unable to sell their properties without making a loss, almost all are faced with hiked up insurance premiums due to the nature to the cladding on their buildings.  They’re stuck between a rock and a hard place.

“I know a number of developers have been cooperating with the Scottish Government to deliver on necessary remedial works where needed.  However, many residents have been waiting long enough for a solution.

“I look forward to the introduction of this legislation, and meantime I’ll continue to engage with residents, developers, and government to help in any way I can.”
